Albert Einstein held that the true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which he has attained liberation from the self. He went further: “A man’s value to the community depends primarily on how far his feelings, thoughts and actions are directed towards promoting the good of his fellows. We call him good or bad according to his attitude in this respect.”
For Einstein, then, the essence of life is giving back to society and rendering selfless service to the human community. That is exactly the notion that defines Atiku Abubakar’s quest for the leadership of Nigeria.
By any standard, Atiku is a fulfilled man. He does not need the burden of Nigeria’s problems. He could rest at Yola among his children and grandchildren, his businesses and his university. Yet at this season of his life he has chosen the harder road, because he cannot rest while millions of Nigerians cannot eat.
A man who has everything and still chooses the burden of the nation is not seeking office. He is answering a call.
A LIFE ALREADY SPENT IN SERVICE
Atiku did not discover service in politics. He served Nigeria for 20 years in the Customs Service and retired in 1989 as Deputy Director, the second highest rank. He built enterprises that employ Nigerians in their thousands, long before he asked anyone for a vote.
With his own money he founded the American University of Nigeria in Yola, the first American style university south of the Sahara. When insurgency engulfed the North East, that university did not shut its gates. It stayed open, and it fed displaced people in their hundreds of thousands. That is the measure of the man Einstein described.
THE RECORD THAT SPEAKS FOR HIM
As Vice President, Atiku chaired the National Economic Council under the Constitution and the National Council on Privatisation under the Public Enterprises Act 1999. These were not ceremonial titles. They placed him at the heart of the reforms that took Nigeria’s GDP from $58 billion in 1999 to $270 billion in 2007.
In those years Nigeria exited the Paris Club debt trap, built its reserves, consolidated its banks and opened its telecommunications market to the world. Nigerians who could not dream of owning a telephone line in 1999 carried mobile phones within a few short years.
Others promise prosperity. Atiku has already helped deliver it once.
A MAN OF CONVICTION, NOT CONVENIENCE
Atiku has been consistently identified with the enthronement of genuine federalism, predicated on the rule of law, the judicious devolution of resources and wealth creation for the common good. His restructuring creed is not a slogan for the season. He has carried it for decades, and he has pledged to empower the states to compete and attain their full potential.
He has studied the hardship that Nigerians are going through and has published his response in advance. The Atiku Economic Recovery Plan is a committed working document, placed before the people to examine him and his intentions before a single vote is cast. He has named welfare and security as his two priorities, declaring that Nigeria is rich enough to look after the welfare of its citizens.
That is the conduct of a man sure of his capacity, with the courage of his convictions, who believes that Nigeria, one and united under honest leadership, can attain greatness in her full potential.
WHAT HE WILL DO
Atiku is cosmopolitan, imaginative and practical. He has a remarkable clarity of thought on what must be done. He is determined to harness Nigeria’s enormous human resources and direct the nation’s energy positively, by investing significantly in education, modern technology, infrastructure and labour intensive enterprises that put young people to work.
He has a firm grasp of the fundamentals, economic, political and cultural, needed to create conducive conditions for productive investment. That investment, in turn, will generate jobs in their millions for Nigeria’s teeming youths, who today roam the streets with certificates and no hope.
In Rotimi Amaechi, his running mate, he has a partner with a record of building schools, health centres and railways. Together they offer Nigeria a ticket of men who have done the work before.
Experience is not a burden on this ticket. It is the guarantee.
THE HOUR HAS COME
The time is fast approaching. As the contest to lead Nigeria gathers momentum, Nigerians should know that Atiku is God’s plan for Nigeria’s presidency. Those who study his journey see the hand of Providence in it: a boy who lost his father at eleven, who fended for himself, who rose by honesty and enterprise, and who has been preserved through every storm for an hour such as this.
His preoccupation now is to please Allah in all he does, and to serve the Nigerian people with everything he has left to give.
This is the next President of Nigeria. On 16 January 2027, the Nigerian people will validate God’s plan with their votes, and they will guard those votes until the will of the people is declared.
102 days to go.
