HE WALKS HISTORY’S ROAD WITH LIGHT IN HIS EYES

Aare Amerijoye DOT.B

Let the world rattle. Let it wrangle. Let opinion collide with opinion until the air itself is hoarse with argument. Politics has always been a marketplace of noise, and no name in Nigeria has been shouted over more loudly, more bitterly, or more unjustly than the name at the centre of this piece.

But history is not a marketplace. History is a courtroom. And in that courtroom, where hysteria is inadmissible and only evidence survives, one verdict is already forming. Whatever else the record says of Atiku Abubakar, it will not forget his humanity.

Politics is noise. Humanity is evidence. And evidence outlives every shout.

THE NAME AND WHAT IT CARRIES

To some, the name is merely a politician. To his detractors, it is whatever their bitterness requires it to be on any given morning. But to the hopeful, to the forgotten, to the weary Nigerian scanning the horizon of today’s despair for a single glimmer of tomorrow, Atiku is something else entirely.

He is a movement wrapped in humility. A vision sewn in sacrifice. A man stitched together, thread by patient thread, from the fibre of public purpose.

He has been maligned by cynics and misread by partisans. They have tried, for decades, to drown his ideals in the static of politics. Yet his compass has never once trembled towards power for its own sake. It points, as it has always pointed, to people.

And his deeds do not shout. They speak in quiet places. In classrooms filled because he built them. In lives mended because he reached them. In communities lifted because he believed in them when nobody else would spare a glance.

THE WAR AGAINST IGNORANCE

Here stands a man who understands a truth too many in power have forgotten, that education is not a privilege to be rationed but a right to be defended.

He does not merely fund education. He wages war against ignorance itself, with every kobo committed and every brick laid in the walls of a school. He does not uplift his people with speeches and vanish before the applause fades. He walks with them, in the muddy trenches of reality, reaching not for ovation but for impact.

He does not build schools for headlines. He builds them because ignorance is the one enemy he refuses to negotiate with.

THE LIGHT ON THE ROAD

Isak Dinesen once observed that God made the world round so that we would never see too far down the road. Perhaps that is true. Perhaps no one sees the whole journey.

But when you walk behind a man like Atiku Abubakar, you do not need to see far. You need only see the light he carries, one deliberate step at a time, illuminating what is possible for a nation that has almost forgotten how to hope.

His legacy is not written by cronies. It is not chanted by hired crowds. It is etched, quietly and permanently, in the silent gratitude of communities given a chance, of young people finding their feet, of citizens daring, once again, to believe.

THE VERDICT THAT AWAITS

Call him what you like. The world may take its pick of labels, and it usually does.

But for those of us whose lives have been touched by his humanity, Atiku is not a name in politics. He is a promise in flesh.

And if history has any honour left to bestow, it shall not forget that.

They argued over his politics. History will record his humanity.
