THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS: A LESSON FROM ATIKU ABUBAKAR.

Senator Ehigie Uzamere

The recent visit of Hajia Aisha Buhari, wife of late President Muhammadu Buhari, to the residence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja is an image that speaks beyond the courtesy of a visit. Aisha Buhari was accompanied by one of her daughters and associates, and Atiku described the encounter as “warm and deeply appreciated.”

The purpose of their discussion was not publicly disclosed, but the significance of the meeting has naturally attracted attention, particularly at a time of intense political activities ahead of 2027.

For those who followed the politics of the 2023 presidential election, the meeting also carries a deeper human meaning. Political contests can create disagreements, wounds and divisions that sometimes extend beyond the politicians themselves.

Aisha Buhari was publicly associated with the political environment of that election, while Atiku Abubakar was the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party. Yet, years after that contest, both sides can sit together with civility and respect. That is an important reminder that politics should never destroy bonds of humanity, friendship and family.

Two things that make this moment particularly significant are firstly, Atiku Abubakar’s response. Rather than dwelling on the political differences of the past, he received Aisha Buhari warmly and graciously. His own account of the visit focused not on old disagreements, but on the responsibility of those concerned about Nigeria and putting the welfare, dignity and future of Nigerians first. This is character of forgiveness at its finest: remembering that yesterday’s political opponent does not have to remain today’s enemy.

Second memorable aspect of the visit is Aisha Buhari’s humility and courage in visiting Atiku. Without her visit, Atiku would not have had this rare opportunity to demonstrate maturity and forgiveness.

There is also a personal dimension to this relationship. Aisha Buhari’s late father and Atiku Abubakar shared a long history of friendship. A fact that both families have had relationships that transcend political contests of individual elections.

Atiku Abubakar’s ability to receive Aisha Buhari with warmth demonstrates the importance of separating political disagreements from personal relationships. In a country where politics can sometimes become bitter and deeply personal, this kind of gesture reminds us that reconciliation is not weakness; it is a sign of maturity and strength.

The greatest lesson for humanity from this encounter, is that forgiveness gives politics a human face. Elections come and go, governments change and political alliances shift, but relationships, respect and the dignity of the human person should endure. The visit of Hajia Aisha Buhari to Atiku Abubakar may have been a simple family or courtesy visit, but it has provided a powerful picture of two people choosing civility over bitterness. Her reception by Atiku Abubakar, demonstrates the capacity of a statesman to look beyond yesterday’s disagreements and keep the door of friendship, reconciliation and national unity open.
