INEC may have ordered an immediate suspension of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise and directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to halt preparations.
The exercise, scheduled to begin April 13, was aimed at cleaning Nigeria’s voter register by removing duplicates, deceased persons, underage entries, and other ineligible records ahead of the 2027 elections.
Following the directive, all related publicity has been stopped and information about the exercise has been taken down from INEC platforms.
The move comes after strong reactions from political stakeholders and members of the public who raised concerns about timing, logistics, and the risk of disenfranchisement.
INEC has not cancelled the exercise but placed it on hold, instructing officials to await further directives.
No detailed explanation has been provided yet.
