In retrospect today, I recall the very sharp and piercing words of one of Nigeria’s foremost labour activists and former NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, do pardon if referenced him not with the right title of Mr, who cautioned a sitting president with a timeless and absolute truth. He said and I quote “The Federal Government must move away from blaming individuals, parties and social happenings but instead focus on repositioning the economy through policies that will drive growth and create jobs”Sadly, the warning has become a prophecy under Tinubu’s leadership which over two years the nation has endured an administration obsessed with power, titles and the ceaseless taking of loans than addressing the real cause of hunger and hardship the larger percentage of people are faced with, in all of these embarrassing facts, the President has overtime built and centered his governance on a series of excuses, blaming the past for present failures while citizens groan under the embarrassing and cruelty of endless taxes, accompanied by rising costs of living and dwindling opportunitiesAs reported by the media houses, blogs amidst many others just recently, the Presidency boasted that Tinubu is “fixing the mess of the PDP years under Atiku’s watch” but painstakingly, let us ask, what kind of fixing drives millions deeper into poverty? What kind of fixing raises fuel prices to unbearable levels, what kind of fixing suffocates businesses with multiple taxation, and makes survival itself a daily miracle? If this is fixing, then it is nothing but punishmentAs the impact is not abstract, it is lived out daily in painful ways, barely a month now, I joined hands with some good samaritans to rush a man to a nearby hospital close to my workplace after he collapsed, diagnosed with hypertension and later confirmed to have suffered a partial stroke and within 30 minutes of his admission another woman was brought in with the same condition and by the third day, a male patient arrived with a similar and related health condition and in less than a week, this small hospital with fewer than 8 rooms had admitted more 5 new patients battling stroke and hypertension all linked to stress and hardship. A consultant in the hospital said while I went to inquire about the health development of the patient that took me there, he said confidently that “ In Nigeria today, many people at the end of each passing day that are required to rest in their beds are not but instead lie awake in fear, wondering how to feed their families the following day, with no idea where the next hope will come from” this stayed with me since I left his hospital while I concluded beyond sentiments that this present day government is demonic and devilish. While the number of patients in that hospital with similar medical condition was disturbing, a salient and a considered profound question of if this could be a reality in a modest private hospital then imagine the overwhelming numbers that large private and government hospitals with hundreds of wards must be recording daily got me worried, I am sure, you see things with me? and does this not showcase to you a silent toll of a failing economy policies that crumble businesses, wipe out jobs, and push ordinary Nigerians to breaking point?Instead of giving Nigerians hope, the government of the day has delivered higher fuel prices, multiple taxation policies that wither businesses and reforms that enrich a few but impoverish the many. One of the chronic and praise singers of Tinubu with the ridiculous chorus of “Jagaban lokan” in the 2023 election admitted few days ago that Tinubu governs not with the compassion of a servant leader but with the arrogance of one who sees power as a trophy to be held and not a responsibility to be carried, I chuckled whilst I bursted in laughter as I asked if it is not commendable of him (Tinubu) who built Lagos and currently building Nigeria and by recognition and performance the best president so far in NigeriaLet contrast this with Atiku Abubakar, who as Vice President played a pivotal role in stabilising the economy at a critical time, Nigeria achieved record debt relief, attracted investment and opened the economy to private participation that created jobs and growth under Atiku’s watch, if we follow his campaigns and yearnings closely without bias over the years, hitherto, his vision has always been rooted in reform with a human face policies that empower citizens and not punish themToday, Nigerians do not need a President who looks backward and trades in blames, what we need is a leader who will look forward with a clear plan to tackle hunger, reduce poverty and grow the economy inclusively. Our nation is in need of someone who understands that governance is about people not propaganda, we need policies about lifting citizens not evil dictates that silences usOn a note, it is pertinent we take into cognizance, a very and fondly word of my then mathematical lecturer, Dr. Ogini whenever he wants to introduce the law of logarithm and in the light of that, it is evident and beautiful to say that, while Tinubu blames the past, Atiku offers the future, while Tinubu piles burdens on Nigerians, Atiku promises relief and while Tinubu clings to titles, Atiku fights for progress. The choice before Nigerians is simple, do we still care for another cycle of excuses and suffering under Tinubu or a new dawn of genuine leadership under Atiku Abubakar? I mean, the man with the experience, the compassion and the vision to drive Nigeria to greater heights. It is never too late to show up, rebuilding our country on the path of prosperity is possible.
