ADC’s Growing Acceptability Intimidating Presidency – Eleka

…Says Nigerians Will Decide 2027 Elections Despite INEC Orchestrations

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its reported decision to de-recognize the interim executive of the party led by David Mark.

Eleka described the development as a sign of institutional bias at a crucial period as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. He reiterated that weak institutions remain a major challenge facing the country, warning that INEC’s actions could erode public confidence in the electoral process.

According to him, the refusal to recognize the ADC leadership fails to take into account the limited timeframe available to political parties to meet electoral requirements, including the conduct of congresses, conventions, and submission of party registers.

He called on party faithfuls and supporters to remain steadfast, expressing confidence that the ADC would overcome what he described as coordinated efforts to weaken opposition parties and create an uneven political playing field ahead of 2027, in which Bola Tinubu is expected to seek re-election.

Commenting on the legal dimension, Eleka maintained that the Appeal Court’s directive to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit is clear and unambiguous. He argued that this implies that INEC should refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of the party, insisting that the leadership led by David Mark remains valid under the prevailing circumstances.

He also raised concerns over remarks attributed to the INEC Chairman in a recent media interview, suggesting that the ADC should not proceed with its convention without the commission’s approval. Eleka countered this by citing provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Section 82(1), which requires political parties to give a minimum of 21 days’ notice to INEC before holding congresses or conventions.

He emphasized that while INEC may observe such processes, its presence is not a legal requirement, noting that the ADC has complied with all necessary notification procedures.

Eleka further asserted that the increasing acceptance of the ADC across the country reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling party and signals a possible shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. He cautioned against actions that could distract opposition leaders or undermine democratic principles.

He concluded by urging INEC to uphold its indeIndependence and neutrality, stressing that in a democracy, the ultimate decision rests with the people.
